Over the years, smoking tobacco has been further and further denormalised.
Now, drinking alcohol since prohibition in the United States of America is starting to be denormalised as well. A big proportion of young adults today are teetotal. Today most pubs have closed down. In the not so distant past, people aspired to the ethos of work hard, play hard. Unfortunately now, it is more work hard and more work hard. Even though many people have switched to coffee shops, they are still working from their laptop computers when they should be taking some time out to enjoy their coffee. This new lifestyle in someway resembles a known description of hell, where a condemned person is tasked with rolling a rock all the way to the top of a hill. Once the rock has reached the top of the hill, it would roll back down to the bottom of the hill so the person would have to repeat the task again and again.
This increasing restraint is both cultural and political. Will the following election see the political aspect turned around? Then, at least those who still want to continue living a more traditional lifestyle will still have the freedom to do so.
