Welcome to Nevada, a land of vast open plains, sheep, cattle, spectacular deserts and magnificent mountains. Well, that’s the opening salvo from the website “netstate” who do their best to entice you there. Nevada thrived on silver mining but the boom of today is in people, and construction, finance, tourism and gambling are thriving. I emphasise tourism & gambling because they go hand in hand. Referred to as “The Silver State”, Nevada sits next to California, home for many of the rich and famous it is easy to see why gambling has become a major source of income.
With gambling comes smokers and smokers bring revenue to all businesses so it is no surprise that when the anti-tobacco lobbyists were screaming at their loudest and got their bans lodged in Nevada, bar owners, cafes & diners were soon up in arms at the loss of trade-and rightly so!.
Yesterday there was great news for all businesses as the State Assembly passed a Bill to overturn the ridiculous state-wide smoking ban in favour of lesser restrictions. OK, it’s gonna be bloody hard work for them getting this through the myriad of hearings and then the Senate but they are on the road to success through sheer hard work and UNITY! Note that word licensees-UNITY. They have set out their own proposals, which in essence seem most reasonable: –
a) …allow smoking and meals in bars and taverns – if they prohibit any patrons under 21.
b) …Taverns still could construct “completely enclosed” sections with separate entrances for younger patrons and adults who want to eat in a smoke-free environment.
c) …They also can construct separate buildings that would be smoke free.
d) …People over the age of 21 who are already smoking should have a choice over whether or not they want food in a bar.
e) …Language to allow smoking in convention facilities for tobacco-related trade shows.
The above shows how simple it is to resurrect the cash flow lost because of intolerant law makers & busybody health lobbyists
The amendments went through by 23-19 votes, which shows that open mindedness & tolerance is once again being considered. Some of the comments are interesting too!
