Anyone who has read Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot series of detective novels will remember that phrase and today the Belgians are demonstrating that have them in great abundance.
A new Pro-choice organisation has begun its life, with assistance from friends in Holland who have successfully achieved amendments to their own smoking legislation. Maatschap Horecaclaim België aim to promote civil resistance to a law which they believe is both unlawful and discriminatory, further they seek where possible a group legal action through the courts against the Belgian state on behalf of Bar and restaurant owners who have seen their profits and livelihoods die due to this legislation.
Their first act of civil disobedience is to take place at a venue in Brasschaat in the near future.
Maatschap Horecaclaim België is supported by its Dutch counterpart Stichting Horecaclaim Nederland who fought long and hard to help bring about amendments in Dutch smoking legislation.
The organisation is only open to Belgian nationals who own or run bars and restaurants. If they only achieve a fraction of what their Dutch allies have achieved then, it is a light of hope that justice and equality has not yet died in Europe.
