“A huge 64% claim cut-price alcohol sold by supermarkets has been the single biggest detrimental factor for their business.”
And why exactly have the supermarkets gained such a foothold with drinkers, which now keeps the drinkers away from sterile, BO infested pubs?
Oh yes… the smoking ban!
It drove 68% of the regular drinkers out of the pubs and also suddenly made it blatantly clear that without their valuable & prolific spending power, pubco charges were exhorbitant. Licensees/Tenants could no longer ‘make it pay’.
Supermarkets rubbed their hands in glee as July 1st drew near for they knew what was going to happen – and they restocked shelves accordingly.
The Dutch immediately created resistance to the ban and formed a ‘collective‘ immediately-their government backed down.
What, exactly, are British licensees doing to save themselves? Absolutely nothing so what is the point of bleating about loss of turnover/business? None!
